Why do managed index funds seem to have a one-day delay on the market?

In following index funds over the past few years, I’ve noticed a strange phenomenon. It seems that (passively and actively managed) index funds seem to have a one-day delay on the actual market. For example, if the DJIA has an awesome rally of +5% on Day 1, then the index funds don’t show the gains until Day 2. Some example index funds that demonstrate this phenomenon are VFINX, JMCVX, and JAVLX.

Thanks for your help! :)
Thanks for your answers so far. So, with non-ETF index funds, if I want to capture the state of the market’s performance on Day 0, I should buy on Day 0, and the price I pay is the price at the close of Day 0. Is this correct?

What are the downpayment guidelines when buying a multi-unit investment property?

Is it different from a primary home? I am interested in an apartment building to purchase as an investment. What are the guidelines for downpayments on an investment property. Is it the same as a primary home? I have heard that it is not the 10-20% minimal downpayment because if all/most of your units are occupied, this is taken into consideration. Websites are appreciated too. Thanks for your help.

How do I cash in old stock certificates, find stock worth and number of shares currently held?

The stock is PPG. If you’re calculating for me, please calculate based on 100 shares in 1982. I think the stock split at least once since then, but I am not certain. Thanks for your help!

What weight card stock should I use for greeting cards if I want them to be sturdy?

I guess what I’d like to know is, what weight is the card stock used in Hallmark or American Greeting cards? I’ve purchased some packages labeled card stock and they are barely heavier than 24 pound typing paper. I’d like something heavier. Thanks for your help!

How often does a correction in the stock market turn into a recession?

I’m interested in "leveraged indexes" (ex., SSO) that imitate the general movement of the stock market with increased power. However, if the market plummets, I’m twice as in trouble as I’d normally be.

I know that predicting the market is a difficult if not impossible task, but are there any early "warning signs" to warn me of an upcoming recession?

Historically, how many times have corrections (10% drop in the market) turned into a true, full-blown recession (20% drop or more in the market)?

Thanks for your help!
Correction: By "recession" I meant a bear market. Sorry for the confusion of terms.

Is it hard to start your own mutual fund?

Being 23 yrs. old and relatively new to the world of financial markets, I of course am not presumptous enough as to think I am ready to start the next Vanguard chain of mutual funds.

But with such a passion for stocks, it certainly seems a possibility I might consider pursuing someday.

What exactly are the main steps in putting together a mutual fund (including federal regulations, advertising techniques, and the chances of 1 new mutual fund getting noticed in a sea of over 40,000 existing ones)?

Thanks for your help!
