I ask because I can’t seem to understand how the stock market is going so great while the economy is in such a horrible state. The stocks are pushing 14,000 and the value of the dollar is getting less and less. The real estate market is hitting the dust. People are spending much more than they get. Foreclosures are running rampant. Unemployment is high.

Last time this kind of thing happen, we ended up in the Great Depression. The stocks were great. The Roaring 20s were full of partying and pizazz. The 30s? People were living in shacks because the stock market crashed.

Now, I may need to brush up on my history, but isn’t this pretty much how things went? I don’t think we’re far from the same ordeal. Even if we don’t hit a depression, things aren’t getting better. I know there’s an economic cycle, but it seems that we’re not rebounding into the positive side. I can’t see how things are going to get better.

For those of you business scholars out there, maybe you can help me.
I feel, though, that if we do hit another depression, it will be much, much worse than that of the 30s.

I’ve always been told that the stock market is a good long term investment if you have a diversified portfolio.

OK, so why are ALL stocks tanking right now? If investors are in it for the long run, why sell everything and not just finanicial institution stocks?

For example, let’s say I have stock in Apple, Merck, ADM, & Krogers, should I bail on them now like everyone elsel seems to be doing?

Why aren’t more people weathering the storm with their stocks?

Yes, I don’t know much about investing!

I try to maintain a 50/50 stocks to cash portfolio. However, i get upset when the stock market goes up because I feel that I could have made thousands of dollars more by having a higher allocation of stocks to cash. But I also get discouraged when the stock market goes down because I am losing money and feel that I should have held more cash and waited to get in then. Does anyone ever feel like this?

Ok, so the market has been going down the past few weeks.

1) Does this mean that people are selling off their stocks?
2) Why would selling your stocks make the market fall?
3) If I own a stock, and then someone else who owns the same stock decides to sell, why does this cause my stock to go down in value?

Sorry if these questions seem stupid but I’ve just started learning about the market.

I look at the little graphs of what different stocks are worth, and it looks like a monkey drew them. Who actually sits there and counts buyers and sellers and determines stock prices? And if the stock market is the indicator of the economy’s well-being, then how can it be closed on weekends!? If it can be turned on and off at will, does that make it a man-made construct? And if so, why does it follow natural laws of supply and demand?

I’ve recently gotten into trading options, but I’ve also noticed that pretty much every stock I look at has gone up since March, and my RSI isn’t helping me much. It basically has all the stocks at 50% right now, so there is no indication whatsoever of which way the market will go from here. Any ideas?
