Is it legal to start a mutual fund with your friends?

I want to start a "mutual fund" sort of thing where I will be the manager of a portfolio. I will invite my friends to pool their money into this fund. If all members join voluntarily and there is a contract stating all the terms including the risk of lost, is this type of thing legal?

Thanks and please let me know if any further clarification is necessary.

What would be a good stock to invest in for a school project?

In my Social Studies/History class, our teacher has created a game for us to play with a virtual stock exchange. You start out with 0,000. This game uses all real stock prices from legitimate companies. Kind of like E-Trade. Only no risk :) . Does anybody know what would be a good stock to invest in?

What is the best investment for your money?

What is the best short term investment for one’s money with the highest return, with the lowest amount of risk? I’m invested in CD’s and they give a good interest rate and very skeptical of the stock market yoyo and not interested in the shaky housing market. But my question still remains and want to know what do you think would be the best investment, also thinking about foreign securities, but what do you think is a good investment and also for retirement long term too?

Is there any risk involved in putting money in money market account?

I know money market account is not isured by FDIC. I will have about 300K to invest but since the stock market is really volatile right now, I like to start investing slowly. I am planning to put some money in money market account at Vanguard. Their money market account have a slightly higher return. I also want to buy some mutual funds that Vanguard offers in the future.
But I am just a little concerned about putting all the money in just one account. Any thought? What kind of risk shoud I think about? Should I go with CD or Bond?
