How do prices change on the stock market?

I’ve always wondered how prices change on the stock market. I’d always thought that you just sold and it would go down. But then i thought, "but someone’s also buying that many shares!". Is it like a haggling system where they try and buy for the lowest price and then the price goes down?

clarification on index funds?

I’m 19 years old and trying to plan for my future. I’ve been trying to do research on things to invest in and originally i went into this looking into buying a mutual fund. most of the information i found said that mutual funds arent the way to go but index funds are where its at. Ive been looking into this "VTSMX" fund but I just don’t understand how i’ll really make money with it long term. I just don’t understand how its a good long term investment. The stock market goes up 2 out of every 3 years i read somewhere but it seems like like it takes 2 years to recover from how long it got at one point. so how do I make money on an index fund when it just platues. As far as the fund is concerned it went to 35$ at one point and then came back down to 14 and then continued to rise to 38 again. I guess I just don’t quite understand and have alot more learning to go. any insight would be wonderful

How do I get the "Voting Record" of mutual fund managers?

Yes, It’s "Shareholder Voting Season" and I was wondering how I would determine how the Mutual Fund Managers VOTE on Stock ISSUES proposed by share holders. Voting for the Board of Directors of Corporations, and Voting for Auditors.

Does anyone know if the Mutual Fund Managers make their votes public, or if I as a collective owner of a Mutual Fund can sway a manager to vote a certain way.

What exactly does it mean when the stock market crashes, in layman's terms?

I know basically what a stock is- a buisness or company divided into shares of the profit, which are sold in the stock market. But what does it mean when the stock market crashes? What exactly is the "Dow" and why do people want it up and not down? I need this in simple terms please- its not for a school thing, im just trying to understand how this works. Thank You!

Investing: ETFs or Index Funds instead of Stocks?

I am planning to start investing but I have no real interest in "beating the market"; staying with the market is good enough for me, and it seems to me that ETFs and index funds are the ways to do this. If I do not want to deal with researching individual stocks, and I am satisfied with "staying with the market", what are the drawbacks of replacing all the stocks in my portfolio with ETFs and index funds?

I am a novice so I would also like to know what the difference between ETFs and index funds are, where I can go to learn more about them, and how I would choose, say, a Vanguard fund over a T. Rowe Price fund. Of course I would invest internationally, having a representation of all the major global markets in my portfolio instead of just the USA or something…

Is now the right time to buy ETFs or Index Funds?

I am new to investing. After quite a bit of research I have decided to buy some ETFs like Vanguard’s Emerging Mkts, Energy and Materials ETF and Index funds like Vanguard’s REITS, Small Cap and S&P 500.

I just want to know if I were to buy the ETFs and Index Funds now, would I be entering the market when it is already at its peak?

Is there any imminent "down cycle" of the market that will make me incur only losses?

I do not want to enter and exit the market at the wrong time.

Is now the right time to buy index funds?

I’ ve been saving up some money to invest in index funds such as REITS, Small cap stocks and Vanguard S&P 500. I’ ve been contemplating if it is the right time to buy these funds now. I am new to investing and I keep hearing that market always goes in up and down cycles.

When i checked out the charts for the index funds I mentioned, it seems there has already been a down cycle between 2002 – 2003. From 2003 onwards there has generally been an upward trend in the charts till now (2007).

Is it ok to buy index funds now hoping that the market will continue to perform well or is there any imminent "down cycle" of the market?

How do I deduct investment advisory fees paid for professional investment services on my 2008 federal taxes?

What form do I use?
Is there a limit to the fees (I payed about K for investment fees)?
Do the fees get bundled into other "deductoins" so that I have to meet a threshold of expenses?

Thanks all!

How does one read a mutual fund historical performance in today's economy?

I’m trying to purchase a mutual fund for an IRA. When I look at a fund’s history everything is in negative numbers due to last years crash. Some funds have a positive return "since inception" but show a negative return over 10 years or less. How can I adequately judge a funds performance when they are showing these kinds of returns?
