Why not just invest in index funds?

Like the S&P 500, since it goes up and down with the market. Is the strategy of an "index and a few" (few refering to stocks) a good way to invest? How should a moderate-higher risk investor invest? Also, since most mutual funds underperform, why should you invest in some(or not)?

What are "equitable funds" and how are they different from mutual funds?

My parents were advised to invest in equitable funds because their investment advisor has been delegating his responsibilities by having them in mutual funds. What does all this mean?

What company should I use for online savings, mutual funds?

This is kind of a two part question. First, what are the best places to open an online savings account? I know about INGdirect, but they only offer 4.5%, and I’ve heard there are places that offer more than that. Anyone know of any?

Secondly, what’s the best place to start with mutual funds. I’d like to start with those, and then work my way into stocks, but I’m looking for a place with a low minimum, and decent rates.

Thanks!

How much money would you need invested in mutual funds to get a decent "monthly" return?

I’ve been trying to add some assets to my life. Is it possible for the average joe to earn an income off of mutual funds, or would I need to have multi hundreds of thousands invested?

I’m not trying to live off investments alone, but I’m curious what kind of fortune I would need to have invested to make a couple hundred dollars a month.

Thanks to those that offer help!

Mutual funds holding foreign equity and foreign tax credit?

I have two mutual funds that hold some foreign equity. I am assuming there are foreign taxes that will be paid related to these. Will I be able to get a foreign tax credit for the taxes paid? What if these are held in a Roth IRA?
If the funds are in a Roth, would I be able to apply a FTC if I have taxable passive income from other sources, or still no?

Is it risky to have all your assets in one mutual fund family?

If I have my money all in vanguard ( in a variety of funds), would I lower my risk by adding another fund family (ex: fidelity)? Since all the money is ultimately in the stock market, I can’t see how it would be less riskier to invest in 2 fund families. After seeing banks fail, people lose houses, huge financial firms go bankrupt, I’m nervous about having all my assets in one institution, but even in Vanguard went bankrupt, I’d still have all my mutual funds in the stock market, right?

mutual funds vs index and bonds?

I currently have my money invested in mutual funds. With the economy the way it is I’ve seen my money going down. I want to invest in something that will make money or at least be steady. I don’t want to lose anymore money. I asked the financial advisor that I had invested the mutual funds with. He has since left the company I have my mutual funds with and is with another financial institute. What I’d like to know is what is the best way to go. stick with mutual funds or invest in bonds or some kind of index fund?
