Can someone please explain stock market investing to me?

I’ve always been told that the stock market is a good long term investment if you have a diversified portfolio.

OK, so why are ALL stocks tanking right now? If investors are in it for the long run, why sell everything and not just finanicial institution stocks?

For example, let’s say I have stock in Apple, Merck, ADM, & Krogers, should I bail on them now like everyone elsel seems to be doing?

Why aren’t more people weathering the storm with their stocks?

Yes, I don’t know much about investing!

Why do you think the stock market fell so much today even though Obama signed the spendulus package?

Can’t the stock stock market be used as a measure of how much confidence Wall Street has in the market?

Didn’t the investors see Obama sign the spendulus bill?

Why didn’t their confidence shoot up???

How does the stock market really work? I have a few questions?

I want to know how the stock market really works in terms of:

1. Investors Buying & Selling shares; how does the trading volume, here, of individual buys & sells affect a company’s stock price?

2. How can you tell how many people/investors are buying or selling a company’s stock in order to go long or short and put the odds in your favour – is there any specific technical analysis indicator that can tell you this, or what else can?

3. How does news affect stock prices?

Mutual funds transferred to an Index fund?

Hey, certainly not the right place to ask important financial questions but did need some quick clarification…

Listening to NPR today and one of the top performing investor’s overall recommendation was that basically, a basic index fund will, on average, out perform any Mutual fund. And, because Index funds have less fees associated with them, the investor really will make out far better in the long run. His advice was, of course, not to pull your money out of your investment account but to perhaps transfer it to an Index Fund.

Since this was really limited information, my question was really about how the mutual fund works. I’ve lost, say, 30k in the 3 different mutual funds I have now. Shouldn’t I just leave the money in (since it’s already a loss) and hope the value goes up in the next 10 years? Or, within the mutual fund are the stocks constantly trading so the stock my mutual fund holds now, will not be the same stock in it 10 years from now. If the later is the case, I can see why moving it to an index fund makes sense. But if investors usually keep the same core stocks, then isn’t transferring my money to an Index fund the same as pulling out of the market? Does this make sense?

What do people do wrong on the stock market that make them fail?

A person said in another answer this:
"Many investors achieve this, (including me). Very few "traders" come anywhere close to that, and though a few make good money, the majority loose their money and slink away very quietly!"

The majority lose their money and sink away. So what do the majority do that make them fail on the stock market? Any links to websites or articles/advice of what not to do wrong when investing in stocks?

How much can one beat the stock market by if they work hard?

I JUST asked this same question today. I think one of the people who answered told me that a wealthy investor will try to beat the stock market by three to five percent, so thats, over the course of the last 30 years, 10 to 12 percent. Is it possible to get more if I study stocks for a living, and am good at it????? What is the deviation from the figure i’ve just given for proffessional investors???

Is there any risk of having your entire portfolio in Vanguard index funds?

And by risk I don’t mean market volatility… I mean risk as in Enron-type risk… Because Vanguard is a cooperative, is it even possible that someone is cooking the books or in a position to screw over the investors?
