What do people do wrong on the stock market that make them fail?

A person said in another answer this:
"Many investors achieve this, (including me). Very few "traders" come anywhere close to that, and though a few make good money, the majority loose their money and slink away very quietly!"

The majority lose their money and sink away. So what do the majority do that make them fail on the stock market? Any links to websites or articles/advice of what not to do wrong when investing in stocks?

How much can one beat the stock market by if they work hard?

I JUST asked this same question today. I think one of the people who answered told me that a wealthy investor will try to beat the stock market by three to five percent, so thats, over the course of the last 30 years, 10 to 12 percent. Is it possible to get more if I study stocks for a living, and am good at it????? What is the deviation from the figure i’ve just given for proffessional investors???

Is there any risk of having your entire portfolio in Vanguard index funds?

And by risk I don’t mean market volatility… I mean risk as in Enron-type risk… Because Vanguard is a cooperative, is it even possible that someone is cooking the books or in a position to screw over the investors?

Who would I contact in the state of Al. regarding the loss of money in the money market?

I lost money in the money market and I know that there is someone that you can contact regarding your loss, I have tried to find out from several sources only to be led in the wrong direction.
I have seen advertisement regarding this matter and I have researched this only to find out that this advertisement was not for the state of Alabama but was for other states, I have also tried contacting some of the Money Management Companies here in my city but it seems that no one know ’s who I need to contact.
I know for a fact that the people who took such a loss in the money market are getting some of their funds back due to the companies that were handling the stocks and fund’s did not have their clients best interest at heart and many people lost a lot of money because of the improper handling of the funds by their investors. I am trying to help my husband out with this due to it was his money that was lost and he is only wanting what is rightfully his. Help him if you can, Please!

Is it a bad idea to buy index funds when markets are closed?

Once the transaction is performed you have no control over the purchase at the end of the next day (regardless of the price per share).
Moreover, they know how big the pool of money is. By that, I mean the pool of money of investors who bought the index fund when markets were closed.

Why is it bad for a mutual fund to have too many assets?

I keep reading on morningstar and other finance sites about how "such and such a mutual fund is getting too bloated with assets," and that this is especially a problem for funds that focus on small-cap stocks. And I see that Vanguard and many other companies have closed funds to new investors–even Vanguard’s Windsor II, which focuses on huge corporations, has restricted new investors. Let’s say a mutual fund purchases more that 50% of a company, why is that bad? Isn’t that what Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway does?
