What is the best way to get into the stock market?

We already have some money in investments but I want to try the stock market. Should I use a broker or do penny stocks or something else? I don’t know much about it.
We have retirement accounts. We are older and have children entering college in 4 years. They have about enough to get them through 2 years. They used to have 3 times that before the ecomony went south. We have one who wants to go to medical school. What are our options?

What percentage of US households has investments in the stock market?

Where can I find statistical data, from a reliable source, about how many households (I’m looking specifically for middle-class, but global stats would also do) have investments in the stock market?. I don’t mean trust funds or other "indirect" investments but people actually buying and trading stocks.

What are the best tools to learn about the stock market for a 16 year old?

Well I been into the stock market since 5th grade and watch CSBN almost everyday, and read about the business world a lot but I still don’t get the stock market. For example, how are do they get those figures on the graphs? I know it’s a representation for the company but not the company itself so how are these numbers made? Is it somebody’s job to make the graphs of a company go up and down or what?
I don’t want to follow somebody! I want to know why they make thoses investments and actually understand what’s going on, not follow pepole around in the dark!

Investing in ETFs or index funds?

I inherited a managed account at a large brokerage. I’ve read that index funds generall outperform index funds with less cost. I asked my broker about transferring to index funds and she wouldn’t acknowlege me. The fifth time I mentioned it, she said, "Oh, ETFs". She then picked out a handfull of investments and expects me to go along with it. I only have a very general knowledge of this. Any input would be appreciated.
Hmm, I just read this again and realized I said that I heard index funds outperform index funds – I should say index funds frequently outperform actively managed portfolios.
I didn’t see any answers here for almost a week, and finally called her. I kept asking her about index funds and she kept referring me to ETFs. I diversified between two of them.
I read some of them and still effectively managed abd she seemed acknowlege that but skirted around that issue when I mentioned it.
I’ve found it extremely frustrating that all of the reading I’ve done about this – it’s all been in very general terms with nothing said about any specific funds – of which there are hundreds to choose from.

Index and no-load funds seem like a no-brainer, why do managed funds exists?

All my investments are in managed funds and to be honest the gains have been mediocre for more than 8 years. I feel I am missing something, why do we pay these professionals that dont seem to add value

Should I liquidate all my index/mutual funds now?

I’ve lost over 50% in a little more over a year and, adjusted for inflation, the stocks have returned NOTHING over the last 23 years.

Everyone says stocks are for the long term – 23 years is not long term?

Do we need to reevaluate the whole concept of investments? Are they just a giant scam?

Also, in 15 years the public debt may reach its critical mass – might it be smart to buy precious metals?
