What do i need to buy an Index fund?

I would like to purchase an index fund and consistently buy more funds on a monthly basis. So my question is, how do i buy an index fund without the high commission charges by the brokerage account?
What type of account do i need? I currently have a stock trading account that enables me to buy individual stock.

Thank You.

Which index fund would you invest in and why?

I am looking to start investing and I have decided that I will invest in an index fund. I dont feel like I can beat the market and like the diversification index funds provide. Would you go with the S and P, Dow Jones, Nasdaq, or another? Why would you choose that choice? Also, can you invest directly in them or do you have to invest in a syder?

What is a good index fund to invest into?

I’m looking to invest some of my cash into an index fund. Are they worth it? I live in Australia, would a domestic or international fund be better? Has anyone got any advice on index funds, or know any specific funds worth looking into?

How easy is it to start an index fund?

Do index funds purchase shares from the market every-time they receive a new subscription (investor capital)? How hard is it to start an index fund/ what is the process? Would an index fund need an administrator and a custodian?

What is the difference between a Exchange traded fund and a index fund?

I am 21 and i ma looking to put my money back to work for me this year. I was told that my best bet is to invest in a index fund that track the S&P 500. However i am also being told that Exchange traded funds (EFT) are the way to go. I would like to know what is the main differences between the two. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Index funds-want to sell but afraid of ST capital gain tax!?

Here’s my situation. I have an index fund for about 4 months. I’m afraid the markets are going down, so I’m considering selling and putting the money elsewhere. But considering I only made a few hundred dollars on it, should I even bother selling and paying the 35% short term capital gain tax? And how do year-end distributions fit into all of this?

Thanks for any help in advance!

Why won’t E*Trade let me buy index funds?

I signed up for the most basic brokerage account. I have about 0 in my investment account. It will not let me buy index funds such as the S&P 500 Index fund.
