How does job loss affect the stock market?

Just heard on CNN that Dow Jones was bit down earlier because of awaited news concerning job loss. The job report out today says there were considerably less people applying for benefits. So, how bad is unemployment news for stock market that it goes down only on the expectation of the reports?

Index funds cannot go to zero ?

Index funds cannot go to zero ? Am I right ? e.g. take the S&P 500 ETF index for SPY.

There are 500 stocks in SPY. Should one stock declares bankruptcy or gets de-listed, it is removed from the index fund SPY and a new stock will be added.

So I think even in a bearish market, the price value of SPY or any index funds including Dow Jones, Hengseng, Nekki, etc will never have a price value of zero.

Should any stock(s) in anyone of these index funds goes belly up, the stock(s) just gets removed or de-listed from the index and a new stock will be added.

Am I right ? Or am I missing anything ?

Even if we have the worst case scenario similar or more devastating than the 1929 market crash, the price of any Index Funds cannot go
to zero value.

Please comment and give me your insight.

Thanks in advance

Which index fund would you invest in and why?

I am looking to start investing and I have decided that I will invest in an index fund. I dont feel like I can beat the market and like the diversification index funds provide. Would you go with the S and P, Dow Jones, Nasdaq, or another? Why would you choose that choice? Also, can you invest directly in them or do you have to invest in a syder?

Do Dow Jones index funds pay dividends?

I heard that sometimes it’s better to invest in index funds than investing in singular stocks because trading costs are lower, but does a Dow Jones Index Fund pay dividends, and can I buy more shares when the Dow Jones Index fund is down?
Where can I find a low cost Dow Jones Index Fund?

What is the stock exchange, how does it work, why does it affect economy?

I’m almost 40 years old, and somehow I have managed to elude my understanding of the stock market. It all seems so superficious to me. I imagine I need to wiki it. I have been about dow jones being down, I don’t understand. I turn the page in the paper and see several pages of stock numbers..I don’t understand them. I don’t know what to make of scrolling blue information on television. I have somehow managed to live 38 years of my life without needing to understand.

Would dollar cost averaging be good for Index funds or stocks ?

I don’t want to time the market. I want to use dollar cost averaging.

Would it be wise to use dollar cost averaging on index funds like s&p500, Dow Jones, etc.

Or would it be better use dollar cost averaging on 3-4 stocks like in GE PFE MSFT (I’m thinking of strong blue chip companies).

Thanks
