I am looking to start investing and I have decided that I will invest in an index fund. I dont feel like I can beat the market and like the diversification index funds provide. Would you go with the S and P, Dow Jones, Nasdaq, or another? Why would you choose that choice? Also, can you invest directly in them or do you have to invest in a syder?

I’m brand new to investing and I’ve been reading some of the articles on Investopedia, but I could use a little more guidance. What is the best way to begin putting together an investment portfolio? Should I just start buying stocks or should I immediately think about diversification and mix it up a bit?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I’d be really happy if you could link to some further reading. Thanks!

If i invest 2-3K in mutual funds how does the process work?
What are some resources for picking the company/fund?
What are some possible costs? upfront or upon retrival or per year?
Is there a minimum time I must leave my money in or can I take it out within a year or 3 or 5 if I want?

Is it wise to invest in different mutual fund companies or just one company for maximum returns? My reason is that in case Company A fails, I still have a backup with other companies.

What is your opinion on this, will it matter if I invest in different companies? What are the chances that a mutual fund company will actually fail/close?
About diversification: isn’t mutual funds already in itself diversification?
