Is the stock market a good indicator of how the economy is doing?

I hear from many people that if the stock market is doing well that that necessarily means the economy is doing well overall. But with the recent increase in oil prices, stagnant wages, the mortgage/credit crisis, and a government with a lot of unfunded liabilities, I find this kind of hard to believe. Can anyone give some objective info on this question?

What is a good argumentative statement that incorporates the stock market and economic crisis?

The economic crisis deals with the credit crisis, bailouts, stock market crash, unemployment rate, value of the dollar etc..

I have to write an argumentative paper about the stock market, but the concept of stocks and bonds are confusing to me, despite doing extensive research. I am having trouble coming up with an argumentative thesis statement. Any suggestions will be helpful
Thanks!

What happens to my mutual funds if my broker goes bankrupt?

There are several banks out thre which also offer brokerage services. some of the banks may declare bankruptcy due to the credit crisis. I have mutual funds in one of those banks. The funds are holdings of all kinds of stock so I would assume they continue to exist. Or am I wrong? Please advise.
