Is it risky to have all your assets in one mutual fund family?
If I have my money all in vanguard ( in a variety of funds), would I lower my risk by adding another fund family (ex: fidelity)? Since all the money is ultimately in the stock market, I can’t see how it would be less riskier to invest in 2 fund families. After seeing banks fail, people lose houses, huge financial firms go bankrupt, I’m nervous about having all my assets in one institution, but even in Vanguard went bankrupt, I’d still have all my mutual funds in the stock market, right?

Is a money market account like a savings account only with higher interest?
Because me and my gf have been trying to save up money for the future. I know banks provide less than 1%apy. Some money market accounts offer over 5% APY. This is a much better rate. What is the difference and what are your feelings towards the two accounts?

Which is best bank in New York for opening a savings (money market) account for 50000$ and above?
Which is best bank in New York for opening a savings (money market) account for 50000$ and above?
I have a CITIBANK which is paying a measly 1%. Any suggestions?
I heard banks in China and India are offering 8-10% rate of interest. Can we (non Indian/chinese citizens) invest in Banks there? Other than currency risks – is there anything else I should check up on?

What happens to my mutual funds if my broker goes bankrupt?
There are several banks out thre which also offer brokerage services. some of the banks may declare bankruptcy due to the credit crisis. I have mutual funds in one of those banks. The funds are holdings of all kinds of stock so I would assume they continue to exist. Or am I wrong? Please advise.

Why did the investment bankers think it was profitable idea to securitize bundle bad mortgage loans?
First I don’t understand why banks would loan money to someone with bad credit or not having the means to repay. Second I don’t understand why investment companies like Bears Stearns would repurchase the loans from the banks. Securitize them and sell them as bonds. What are they learning at these prestigious business schools? How to be a licensed crook? The credit rating agencies are seem to be payed by not assigning the proper credit ratings. The country is falling apart because people don’t have the discipline to live within there means. Greed is running rampant.

Did the stock market crash because the banks were failing? How do failing stocks affect the economy?
In words that I will be able to understand, can anyone explain to me the correlation between the banks, the housing crisis, and the stock market. And how does the stock market affect the economy itself? I am just beginning to understand what the stock market is, so numbers and statistics are really not helpful.
