clarification on index funds?

I’m 19 years old and trying to plan for my future. I’ve been trying to do research on things to invest in and originally i went into this looking into buying a mutual fund. most of the information i found said that mutual funds arent the way to go but index funds are where its at. Ive been looking into this "VTSMX" fund but I just don’t understand how i’ll really make money with it long term. I just don’t understand how its a good long term investment. The stock market goes up 2 out of every 3 years i read somewhere but it seems like like it takes 2 years to recover from how long it got at one point. so how do I make money on an index fund when it just platues. As far as the fund is concerned it went to 35$ at one point and then came back down to 14 and then continued to rise to 38 again. I guess I just don’t quite understand and have alot more learning to go. any insight would be wonderful

Can I move a mutual fund to a Roth IRA account and not pay any taxes?

I’ve got a Vanguard mutual fund in a non-retirement account. I’ve had it about 3 years now. I’d like to move it to a Roth IRA account, but I do not want this to be a taxable event. Is there any way I can do that? Or must I sell them, pay capital gains on the earnings, and then use that money to invest in a Roth IRA.

Any Canadian mutual fund portfolio trackers that allow re-occurring transactions and actually work?

I am looking for a free canadian mutual fund portolio tracker that allows re-occurring transactions. I am currently using fundlibrary.com but their re-occurring transaction ability has not been working for the past 3 years and they have no intention of fixing it. The other option is globeinvestor.com but i would rather not have to pay 159$ a year for something that should be a free service.

What does extremely high capital gains tell you about a mutual fund.?

I have been with a stock mutual fund for 20 years and for the last 3 years capital gains are increasing to the point where this year they reflected a third of the total value of the fund. This is killing me in terms of tax penalties and liabilities. Why would this happen and what does this tell you aboutr the fund?

What is the return on investment of a check cashing franchise?

I am working with a franchise consultant who is recommending that I purchase a check cashing franchise with a company called Family Financial Centers. I have never owned a franchise before. I would like to find out from current franchisees of this or other companies how much investment of their personal time is necessary and what kind of net profit are you making per year. Family Financial Centers is a new business (3 years) so I’m concerned that there is no long term track record of it’s profitability.

Mutual Fund?

(Q1)
Everybody talks about investing money in Mutual Fund.
suppose, you want to invest some money in Mutual Fund (CLOSE ENDED for 3 years say) (say in HDFC Tax saving Mutual Fund).

How you will be paid your return after 3 years ?

does the Mutual Fund company AUTOMATICALLY sends your profit(if any) by cheque to your home address ?

who pays the return(profit) ? i am confused, how one will get the return(profit) ?

(Q2)
Now suppose,

suppose, you want to invest some money in Mutual Fund (OPEN ENDED i.e you can withdraw money at any time…right ?) .

now, say you want to discontinue after 3 Months.

what you have to do ? i have read …you have to "sell the Mutual Fund" ….but selling to whom ? how do i get the customer to sell?

is it necessary to sell ?

if i dont sell but want to withdraw what will happen ?

very much confused.
——————————————-
can you please clarify my some more doubts ?

which is better mode of investment ?

(1)with dividend or without dividend ?
(2)close ended or open ended ?
————————————–

i have also read a fact , that suppose you invested some mone to a MF fund company. but the MF company ruined and could not survive….thats means, you are not getting any profit…right ? your money is gone….correct ?

well ok….but the most stunning fact and dangerous thing i have read is that you have to sell your furnitures,TVs,Computers and other household things to pay off the MF company . because , they say,…you too have the liability as the company ruins so you also ruin.

is this fact true ?
